Manny Pacquiao working with his strength and conditioning coach!!!
Strength and conditioning has been used in boxing for years but in a very basic form, the types of exercises I mean are calisthenics body weight exercises some of which are bur-pees, press ups, sit ups and pull up’s these are good exercises for a basic level of strength and conditioning but to gain more effective results the exercises need to be beneficial and specific to the boxer (to make the boxer punch harder, faster or to help the boxer’s footwork become faster).
The above mentioned calisthenic exercises have been used in boxing for years and have become traditional exercises and the more recent types of exercises that have been scientifically proven to improve a boxers performance, for an exercise to be effective it must be specific for example to improve a boxers power in the right hand you would have to perform a move that replicates the technique of the right hand for example a medicine ball throw against a wall, or to improve the boxers fitness it would be more beneficial to train specifically for the amount of time they compete for (if the boxer was fighting for 3 x 2 minute rounds it would be better for them to train in 2 minute rounds)
The best example of how effective strength and conditioning is for boxers is Manny Pacquiao who has boxed at several weight class’s and always takes his power up to the next weight class.
At Elite Boxing we offer a full range of exercises including fitness circuits, strength and conditioning circuits and various other exercise programmes. All our lessons are small private class’s and we coach boxing skills and Thai boxing skills also.
